Why Use Natural Deodorant?

Here's an interesting tidbit…

SWEAT DOESN'T STINK!

That's right.  Sweat, including armpit sweat, is ODORLESS!

Sweat only smells due to
microbial/bacterial activity.

Typical methods to control this activity and combat odor is through the use of antiperspirants or deodorants.

Antiperspirants are BAD!

Antiperspirants by design go against the body's natural function.  They use aluminum powder to plug up the sweat glands to minimize the amount of sweat.  The theory is that reducing the amount of sweat available for bacteria to thrive will reduce the amount of odor and can then be controlled through the use of fragrance and other chemicals.

The problem is that this is keeping the body from releasing toxins as well as allowing chemicals to enter through the very porous underarm skin.

Also, the body wants to sweat and it needs to sweat, so over time it will usually try to produce more sweat to break through.  That is why more and more people are finding that they need to start using a stronger antiperspirant to maintain the same level of dryness as before.

Deodorants don’t stop sweating, but typical commercial deodorants use a bevy of chemicals to cover up odor.

Some of the chemicals used are:

Aluminum
An aluminum compound, usually listed as Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex GLY or Aluminum Chlorohydrate, is the main ingredient in antiperspirants – typically 14-20% of the total product.  It is a metal which has been linked to breast cancer in women and increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Parabens
This synthetic preservative is found in many personal care products. The largest concern is that these chemicals will disrupt our delicate hormonal balance. Paraben exposure has also been linked to birth defects and organ toxicity.

Propylene Glycol
This is a petroleum based material. In large quantities, studies have shown that it can cause damage to the central nervous system, liver, and heart.

Phthalates
Typically listed as “Fragrance” this class of chemicals has been linked to a variety of health issues including birth defects.

Triclosan
Triclosan is an artificial antimicrobial chemical utilized as the odor killing part of antiperspirants and for its anti-bacterial properties.  This chemical is actually classified as a pesticide by the FDA and a probable carcinogen by the EPA.  It also may kill healthy bacteria as well as harmful bacteria and may encourage bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

So what is the answer to this?
